Here the going rate was $15 per lock and a trip fee of $50-$75. So my four locks would have cost at least $110. The rekeying kit took me about 15 minutes start to finish for each lock. My main complaint is that the plastic tool included for non-deadbolt exterior locks is pure junk. It broke. I found another way to rekey the locks that didn't involve following the instructions exactly and that worked just as well. What I found odd was that no hardware stores or big box retailers sell this. They all claimed nothing exists. Clearly, this exists and it works perfectly fine. This and a screw driver are all you need to rekey a lock. Don't bother with a lock smith. This kit, by the way, is for Schlage 5 pin locks. If you want to know if you have a 5 pin lock, count the number of depressions on your house key. I have eight locks, so I simply bought two sets like some people recommended and use only one color-coded key for all the locks. There are videos on YouTube from Prime-Line on how to rekey (skip the written instructions. They seemed way too complicated!) and they are very useful, especially the one that shows you how to put back the bottom pins and springs if they happen to come apart :) A few words of advice: 1) Skip the whole "tape" on the metal instruction on how to put the bottom pins together. I couldn't make it work and I got frustrated. Then I simply used tweezers and a good cup of tea. I think it helps if you're a woman (like me) because of small hands... 2) When I got to the deadbolts, the quarter turn does not work for them. And the key seemed to get stuck in the cilinder. I oiled it, took it apart again, and wiggled it until it worked. I don't have any experience in rekeying, but I definitely felt very much accomplished after... I didn't even bother with the paper instructions because it's 2013, and for the most part, if it exists, so does a video on how to use it. I went online in search of a how-to video; sure enough there was a video by the company that makes this product. Clear as day instructions for both deadbolts and knobs. After the first one, it takes only a few minutes for the next. I've never done this before; I did 2 knobs and 2 deadbolts in about a half hour. The hardware stores around me would only re-key new locks bought in the store and buying new was just a waste of money when we had perfectly good ones. I do wish that the purple/red and silver/gold were easier to tell apart, the colors are too close. The included keys were a little finicky at first but after a couple days of use work just like any other key. |
